The Long Way Home - Day 24 - Starting the Assent

Friday, July 17th

Today we said goodbye to Oklahoma and rode through the corner of New Mexico, on our way to La Veta, Colorado.
The day started out like the other Oklahoma days with some long straight roads
As we rode through New Mexico, we started to see some smaller hills and the road started to curve

Around the New Mexico/Colorado border, there was an area of really beautiful plateaus with lush valleys between.

As we approached La Veta, we could start to see the types of mountains that we were heading into.  Some of them were still capped with snow.  These two had no snow but their peaks were above the tree line.  The cooler temperatures were a welcome change.  We even considered stopping to put on our jackets - maybe tomorrow

Our lunch stop today was in Trinidad, Colorado.  We spotted the cool car of the day there.  But today we will have to call it the cruel car of the day
My wife did most of the planning of the hotels and today she set us up with a memorable one!  This is the stuff that makes the trip fun.  This is in Circle the Wagons Trailer Park in La Veta.  They have two of these classic trailers for rent.

Tomorrow we continue our assent into the Rocky Mountains with Salida, Colorado as our destination.
